Are you a health care worker looking for employment? Understaffing of public healthcare facilities remains one of the leading obstacles to achieving and maintaining acceptable levels of service delivery in the South African public healthcare sector. Africa Health Placements (AHP) aims to support the recruitment, registration, placement and retention of public sector health professionals in Africa through targeted marketing campaigns, a professional recruitment service, orientation programmes and retention strategies, as well as through supporting a network of local and international institutions and donors who are working to improve the healthcare capacity of the continent. AHP was officially launched in July 2008 as a result of the joint venture between The Placement Project (of FPD) and The Rural Health Initiative (of the Academy for Family Practice). Within this project, priority is given to: · those facilities serving the most disenfranchised sectors of the healthcare system; · prioritising the needs of the most indigent; · balancing short-term demands and long-term solutions, with the goal of ultimately becoming a major player in all aspects of healthcare staffing in Africa. According to the World Health Organization (2005), developed nations such as the US enjoy ratios of over 550 doctors per 100,000 people. South Africa has around 60 doctors per 100,000. Having accounted for inequities within the SA healthcare system, certain rural communities may only have as few as two or three doctors per 100,000 people. AHP offers: - A free service
- CPD accredited training opportunities
- Access to reference material
- Support through partners
- Career paths in the public sector
AHP supports and assists: - The National Department of Health in its own recruitment and government–to–government agreements in the placement, orientation and retention of recruited health care professionals.
- The Health Professions Council of South Africa, the South African Nursing Council and local and international organisations in their efforts to improve the health care capacity of South Africa.
