SIDA

A Gender Based Violence project was initiated to identify women subjected to violence to help break the often long term, systematic abuse.  The health sector and health professionals were identified as key role-players acting as catalysts for increasing awareness and action to address this culture of violence. The National Centre for Knowledge on Men’s Violence against Women, Uppsala University Hospital (NCK), a Swedish partner, and the Foundation for Professional Development (FPD), a South African partner have embarked on a Gender Based Violence project.
Project objectives:

  • To development of a series of training programmes tailored to the working environment of health care and educational professionals that will enable them to recognise and respond to victims of violence
  • To training 3750 health care and educational professionals on violence related subjects such as recognising and dealing with gender based violence. This will include training community service doctors (newly qualified doctors who have to work in government hospitals for 2 years after qualifying) on how to collect forensic evidence in violence injury and especially rape cases utilizing standardized guidelines and evidence collection kits. Training will also be extended to teachers aiming at prevention of violence.
  • To develop a service directory that will list all government and civil society resources that are available in each province that will be used by participants of the training programme to identify organizations that victims of violence can be referred to for support
  • To create opportunities for advocacy on violence.
