Advancing student teacher experience and skills through practical placement in well operating schools. 

OBJECTIVES

1. We provide an excellent teaching experience and mentorship through an internship in well-operating schools.
2. We assist schools with valued cost effective teacher support.
3. We strengthen teacher capacity to deliver quality education.

HOW WE OPERATE?

Student teachers in the process of studying their B.Ed or PGCE through a distance education model (i.e., UNISA) will be placed full time into a well operating school, supervised by an assigned mentor teacher. The programme will roll-out as follows:

B.Ed student teachers:

• All students who have completed at least 10 modules can apply for placement in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of studying
• Internship period can be 1-3 years depending on the number of years that the student teachers still have to complete their studies
  
• Year 1 of placement: student teachers will serve as teaching assistants, observing the mentor teacher, assisting learners, teaching a few lessons with strong supervision
• In year 2 and 3: student teachers will start teaching full lessons with strong supervision from the mentor teachers

FPD will provide the recruitment, matching and placement services – matching the schools’ needs to the student teacher candidate profiles and coordinating the labour administration. FPD will ensure that the student teachers receive induction and ongoing support services, including soft skills training requirements.

Participating schools will pay a stipend to cover living expenses for the student teachers, which will range from 10-15% of a teacher salary in year 1-2 and 30-50% in year 3-4. This stipend will ensure that top-notch, high quality student teachers are attracted into the programme.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

• B.Ed students who have completed their 1st year with a minimum of 10 modules
• The minimum requirement is 60%
• Internship opportunities are for students who are based or are willing to relocate to GAUTENG and KZN.
