Muscular Dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases characterised by progressive muscular weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles that control movement. There is no specific treatment for any form of MD. Professional nurses need to have an understanding of the disease and how it can be prevented, diagnosed and appropriately managed, as well as how the family can be supported and assisted to care for their affected member.

Course Structure

Distance education through a comprehensive self-study guide developed by experts in the field supported by a 1-day interactive contact session.

Module Outcomes

  • Muscular Dystrophy: The 70+ group of disorders known as MD, their aetiology, transmission, diagnosis, management and treatment.
  • Prevention: Genetic counselling and public awareness.
  • Support of those affected by MD: Attaining optimal health for people living with MD and determining support structures.


Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Healthcare Professionals for 5 CEU’s on Level 1


To qualify for the certificate of attendance for this workshop, participants should fully attend the workshop.
