Introduction

The malaria course was developed for use by health professionals in South Africa. The objective of the course is to provide all those involved in the diagnosis and treatment of malaria with a clear and practical guide. The aim is appropriate management of cases of malaria to reduce malaria- related morbidity and mortality. This course will also provide the participant with the best information regarding prevention of malaria for travellers visiting malaria transmission areas.

An extensive literature survey has been undertaken using the skills of a number of experts and experienced individuals in the field. The contents apply specifically to malaria disease management and prevention in South Africa and may not be applicable or appropriate for malaria management in other countries.

Who Should Enrol

All healthcare practitioners working in the clinical field. The exit outcome of this course will be to enable participants to be proficient in the management of malaria.

Course Design

The course will be taught through a combination of self-study and a 2-day interactive workshop facilitated by leading experts in the field. Workshops will be interactive through a combination of case studies and discussions. Please note, as the workshops are facilitated and not didactic, participants will receive study material 2 weeks prior to the workshop to enable them to work through the content and actively participate in the discussions.

  • The historical background of malaria.
  • The biology, transmission, pathogenesis and diagnosis of malaria.
  • The clinical presentation of malaria.
  • The approach to the management of malaria.
  • The general management and treatment of severe malaria.
  • An approach to malaria in pregnancy.
  • The approach to the management of malaria in infants and children.
  • The treatment of non-Plasmodium falciparum infections.
  • The approach to the management of malaria and HIV.
  • Hyper reactive malarial splenomegaly.
  • Information on the drug dosages, indications and general information.
  • The prevention of malaria.
  • The chemoprophylaxis of malaria.
  • Malaria elimination.
  • Malaria vaccines.
  • Clinical case study.

Assessment

Participants are assessed on the self-study component of this short course through means of a multiple-choice questionnaire. These must be submitted to the Foundation for Professional Development for assessment.

Accreditation

Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Healthcare Professionals for 30 CEU’s on Level 2

Certification

The Foundation for Professional Development will award successful participants with a certificate of completion for this short course should they attend the workshop and successfully complete the assessment process.
