Every hour in South Africa 5 people have heart attacks and 10 people have strokes according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of SA (2016).
Yet, despite many awareness campaigns cardiovascular disease (CVD) is still the leading cause of mortality in South Africa next to HIV/AIDS. More individuals die from CVD than all of the cancers combined. This is mostly due to the rise in cardiovascular risk factors such as a sedentary lifestyle with urbanization, smoking, obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol levels. In order to effectively control CVD risk factors and reduce the burden of CVD disease, South African healthcare workers must unite in reducing the risk factors for CVD.
This course will provide you with the knowledge and tools to effectively diagnose and manage the risk factors as well as common CVD diseases.
