Introduction

HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) is now referred to HIV Testing Services to embrace a range of services that should be provided together with HIV testing. Responding to HIV and AIDS is one of the most important tasks in South Africa, which is why the prevention of new HIV infections and treatment and care of HIV-infected people are one of the South African government’s top priorities. Advanced – level HIV/AIDS counselling and testing has become a healthcare discipline. A healthcare provider’s skills play an integral and continuous role in the HIV/ AIDS medical management team, as well as HIV Rapid Testing. Rapid testing Quality Improvement Initiative (RTQII) aims to ensure the quality of HIV rapid testing. Accurate HIV diagnostic testing is the first step to identifying infected persons for follow-up referral and care.
This combined course is designed to train health care workers on HIV Testing Services as well as the accurate use of HIV rapid testing.

Assessment

Participants are assessed by means of multiple-choice questionnaires at the end of each module. In order to be successful a pass rate of 50% is required

  14. Record keeping by entering data in the standardized HCT register.

  16. Proficiency Testing

Exit Level Outcomes

  1. Define and describe HIV infection, the mode of transmission, disease progression and treatment options within the broader context of the role of HTS in the overall management of the epidemic.
  2. Demonstrate the communication skills necessary within the framework of counselling and testing.
  3. Explain the process of pre- and post-test counselling, apply informed consent principles and be able to perform the testing for HIV.
  4. Explain the prerequisites of the South African legal framework and HIV within the scope of counselling and testing and rapid testing for HIV.
