Introduction
This course equips professional nurses with the knowledge and skills to provide effective family planning services aligned with South African Department of Health guidelines.
Family planning enables individuals to determine the number and timing of their children through contraceptive methods and infertility treatment, improving health outcomes and empowering women
in society.
Family planning reduces unintended pregnancies, lowering maternal ill-health, pregnancy-related deaths, unsafe abortions, and HIV transmission. It also helps delay early pregnancies in young girls,
reduces risks for older women, and enhances educational and employment opportunities for women.
With 11 modules covering modern contraceptive methods, patient-centered counseling, and practical skills such as Implanon and IUCD insertions, this course addresses barriers to contraception, including limited access, method choice, and gender-based challenges. Nurses completing this course will be equipped to meet the reproductive health needs of patients and reduce the unmet need for contraception, benefiting individuals and communities alike.
