National Cancer Screening Campaign Project

The Foundation for Professional Development (FPD) supports national efforts to strengthen cancer awareness and early detection through the National Cancer Screening Campaign. The initiative was implemented in collaboration with the National Department of Health (South Africa) and supported by AstraZeneca.

The campaign was launched to increase public awareness of cancer, improve understanding of risk factors, and strengthen referral pathways for screening, diagnosis, and treatment. The programme also aimed to improve access to information and support services for individuals at risk of cancer, those living with the disease, and their families.

FPD played a key role in supporting the implementation of the campaign through project management, stakeholder coordination, and communications activities. This included working with government departments, civil society organisations, healthcare providers, and community stakeholders to promote cancer awareness and encourage screening uptake.

Key Focus Areas

The campaign focused on several strategic areas:

  • Raising awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and available screening services
  • Educating communities about cancer risk factors and symptoms
  • Promoting screening and early diagnosis
  • Strengthening referral pathways for patients requiring further care
  • Engaging healthcare workers, civil society organisations, and traditional healers in cancer awareness initiatives.

Stakeholder Engagement

The National Cancer Screening Campaign required collaboration across multiple sectors. The initiative brought together partners from government, non-governmental organisations, the private sector, and community structures to support a coordinated national response to cancer awareness and screening.

Project Outcomes

Through its role in the campaign, FPD contributed to:

  • Strengthening national cancer awareness initiatives
  • Improving coordination among stakeholders involved in cancer screening and education
  • Expanding public knowledge of available cancer services and support mechanisms
  • Promoting earlier detection and improved pathways to care.

The project formed part of FPD’s broader work in health systems strengthening and public health promotion.
