When most people hear the word “outbreak,” they think of a distant event — something happening elsewhere, involving a disease they’ve never heard of. Yet recent history tells a different story.

COVID-19 demonstrated how quickly a local health event can become a global crisis. More recently, outbreaks involving diseases such as mpox, Ebola, avian influenza, cholera, and hantavirus have highlighted an uncomfortable reality: infectious disease threats are emerging in increasingly unexpected places and contexts.
