Six steps to ensure a winning CV

Published 17 August 2022

The importance of a good CV (resume) cannot be underestimated. This is your opportunity to stand out from the crowd. Companies do not have the time to interview every candidate that applies, so they select the best-looking resumes by process of elimination.

Step 1: Highlight key words in the job description. Before applying, make sure to go through potential job listings that interest you and highlight key words that indicate what they want in an ideal candidate. For example, if a company is looking for a secretary, key words could be: “Customer service”, “Scheduling” and “Secretarial”. Use the relevant key words in your resume so that it is a direct correlation to what they are looking for.

Step 2: Find the format that best works for you. There is no best CV format, but the internet will give you many good examples, it is best to experiment until you are satisfied with the result. However, do not go over-the-top with the design as it might distract the recruiter from the actual important content.

Step 3: Start off by making a personal statement. This includes the reasons for applying, the goals you want to reach, who you are and what you bring to the table. Make use of this chance to convince the potential recruiter why you are the right person for the job.

Step 4: Focus on highlighting the skills you acquired throughout your career, rather than highlighting your work experience first. Remember when changing careers, the potential recruiter might not be familiar with the roles and responsibilities you had in the previous industry. So, it is easier for recruiters to acknowledge skills and talents acquired throughout your career. List key words again such as “team player”, “great communication” and “work well under pressure” for example.

Step 5: Do a chronological employment history, starting with the most recent.

Step 6: List your acquired educational experiences. This is not exclusive to formal education, list everything from short courses to certificates you engaged with, even if it is not yet completed.

Tip: Always send your CV with a cover letter that is customized to the organization and the specific job description you are applying to. You have to convince the recruiter in this letter that you are the best candidate for the job. If you can do this your CV becomes the supporting evidence to get you to the interview
