Short Course in the Clinical Management of Mental Health - E-learning

Introduction

Mental illness is a major cause of morbidity as well as some mortality, particularly amongst vulnerable people worldwide. WHO estimates that over 400 million people around the world currently suffer from mental or neurological disorders or from psychosocial problems such as those related to alcohol and drug abuse. The mental health act recognises that health is a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing and that mental health services should be provided as part of primary, secondary and tertiary health services. Lack of provision of services as well as mental health promotion may lead to common displays within HIV positive clients, this is also applicable to suicidal ailments, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression to mention a few

Course Design

This is an online course. Participants have 3 months to complete the assessment process from date of registration.

Course Content

The following modules will be covered:

  • The doctor-patient relationship.
  • The psychiatric interview, history-taking and mental Status evaluation.
  • Testing in psychiatry -
    • Laboratory testing (e.g. blood tests).
    • Psychometric testing (no prior qualification Required).
    • Specialized diagnostic procedures (e.g. EEG, SPECT scan).
  • Typical signs and symptoms.
  • Classification of mental illness as dictated by the DSM V, with emphasis on mood, anxiety and psychotic disorders, organic mental disturbances and somatic disorders.
  • Current therapies with emphasis on the pharmaceutical approach.
  • Enlisting support systems.
  • Referrals.
  • Specific psychiatric conditions - HIV+, geriatric, children, sleep disturbances.
  • Grief and the dying patient.
  • Substance abuse and dependency.
  • Psychiatric emergencies - trauma and suicidal tendency.
  • Legal aspects and the Mental Health Act.
  • Patient confidentiality.
  • Mental health promoting skills.

Accreditation

Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Healthcare Professionals for 27 Clinical & 3 Ethical CEU’s on Level 2

Certification

Participants will receive a certificate of completion for this short course once successfully completing the assessment component.
