The skin is the largest organ of the body, making up 16% of body weight and has several vital functions including immune function, temperature regulation, sensation and vitamin production. This course is developed for all healthcare workers who are involved in the assessment, treatment and ongoing management of wounds. The course will support clinical decision making in relation to the assessment and management of wounds, in line with individual professional competence

Course Design

This course is a classroom course and participants will receive a comprehensive and user-friendly study guide developed by experts in the field covering all the modules. The course is offered using participatory methods and building on shared knowledge with the participants.

Course Content

After completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • identify the different structures of the skin and understand the physiology of wound healing
  • differentiate between the different categories of wounds
  • holistically asses a patient and their wound/wounds
  • develop an individualised treatment plan utilising international assessment tool
  • differentiate between the different wound care product categories and types available in South Africa
  • perform wound care procedures in line with infection control best practice
  • apply best practice principles to all different categories of wounds
  • adapt their practice in a low resource setting with best practice principles
  • document and monitor treatment, identify problems, manage and refer as required to the multi-disciplinary team


To qualify for the certificate of completion for this short course, participants should fully attend the workshop and successfully complete the assessment process. The course is accredited for 30 CPD points (HPCSA)
